Living in Munich-Harlaching
Harlaching belongs to Munich's 18th borough, Untergiesing-Harlaching. Covering an area of 805 hectares, this borough extends, bordered by the forest areas of the Perlacher Forst to the south, to the banks of the Isar in the west, with Untergiesing and Obergiesing to the north and east.
Thanks to the highway intersection of Autobahn 995—which connects to federal motorway 8 and the Munich-East ring road—as well as subway line 1 and tram line 25, Harlaching has excellent connections to the road network and public transportation.
The small St. Anna Church was once the historical beginning of Harlaching. With only about 50 inhabitants, Harlaching was incorporated into Munich on October 1, 1854. Increasingly rapid construction activity in Munich's Harlaching only began around 1900. On the site of the former castle, the construction of the Harlaching garden city began, which has preserved its green charm to this day. This was followed by the Menterschwaige villa colony on the banks of the Isar. In the 1970s, many smaller residential buildings were demolished. These were replaced by condominium complexes. Today, alongside the upscale old villa district, numerous new buildings exist in Neuharlaching.
Currently, about 50,500 people live throughout the entire district, with the older generation dominating. However, this neighborhood is also very popular with families. In the past, the upper social class lived in Alt-Harlaching. The lower and middle social classes settled in Neuharlaching, while traditional worker housing could be found in Untergiesing. In the meantime, the once sharply drawn social boundaries have become fluid.
Most jobs can be found in the service sector, public institutions, and healthcare. The large municipal hospital is the largest employer due to its status as an academic teaching hospital. Throughout the entire district, there are five hospitals, numerous general practitioners and specialists, 10 pharmacies, 12 schools, 42 day-care centers, and 4 nursing homes. Several supermarkets also ensure a „comprehensive“ basic supply for the population.
Harlaching offers not only its residents a special recreational value. With the beautiful Isar meadows, the training ground of FC Bayern Munich, and the world's first geo-zoo, Hellabrunn Zoo, this district has a high recreational value in Munich.
